Who Is in the Pew?

Luke 5:27-31

27 After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. “Follow me,” Jesus said to him, 28 and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.

29 Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them. 30 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

31 Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

“I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”  Makes complete sense, right?  BUT I think we forget that simple fact way too many times.  Why do I say that?  How dare I say that?

Let’s think together.  Who are we most often drawn to; those more like ourselves or less like ourselves?  Do we encourage differences of opinion in our churches, in our conversations, or do we want complete like mindedness?  Are we more comfortable in a box (figure of speech) of our design or out in open spaces where anything and everything can and may happen?  Are we seeking comfort or are we seeking to comfort?

There have been and are a couple people in “my world” that are a challenge to me.  I see one of them coming and my human side wants to duck and run for cover.  I don’t want to engage; I don’t want to give of myself what will be needed in order to be a child of God to this person.  Sounds awful, right?  It is awful and yet I struggle time and time again.

Well recently, I have taken a new attitude with a couple of these “challenges” and what is happening is pretty astounding……….I am beginning to learn of the person inside and see passed the mask they live behind.  I am even beginning to LIKE THEM!  If we but step out of our box in trust, God will show us things we never imagined and use us in ways we never thought possible or even desired.

We are here to show people THE WAY.  We are here to pray for and lead others to life in Christ.  We are here to live by example even when we don’t want to!
