And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.
Sitting in church this past Sunday I noticed that we had inadvertently left a chair up on the chancel; a solitary chair facing out toward the congregation. At first I thought, “oops”, and then I thought, “Oh, very appropriate, the guest of honor, Jesus, has a place to sit and be with us.”
Then this morning I began to read the events of the birth of Christ as written by Luke. A shepherds job is to care for and protect his sheep. The shepherds had to keep sharp vigil at night when darkness would add to the advantage of the predator attempting to make a meal out of one of the sheep. Jesus, the Great Shepherd is with us in the “darkness” of life. Shepherds feed and water their flocks in the light and protect during the darkness. Don’t you find that interesting? We are fed IN the light and protected FROM the dark. Lots of symbolic metaphors there. Please share your thoughts.
Blessings and Peace,
